Although we all remember that everything started with legendary Norton Commander, somehow lots of TC users religiously believe that every other, two pane file manager, is a not worthy clone. They all share the same roots, but TC with its rich Plugin library managed to capture the largest user base.

In this article I will try to cover the most popular alternatives for both TC and NC. It is not a review though, so you won’t find any particular recommendation at the end. Everyone chooses the set of features that is relevant for his or her needs.

So without any further delay, lets start:

1. Beesoft Commander

Beesoft Commander

Unfortunately the Home site of this commander doesn’t provide a lot of additional info, but there are some more shots that might be helpful.

2. emelFM2

emelFM2

emelFM2 uses a simple and efficient interface pioneered by Norton Commander, in the 1980s. The main window is divided into three parts, described as “panes” or “panels”. Two of those (side-by-side or top-to-bottom) show the contents of selected filesystem directories. The third pane, at the bottom of the window, shows the output of commands executed within the program. Those panes can be resized, and any one or two of them can be hidden and unhidden, on request. A built-in command-line, toolbar buttons or assigned keys can be used to initiate commands.

3. gentoo (yes, Gentoo distr. folks are cool with this name)

gentoo

Some of the main features of gentoo are:

Written from scratch, in straight ANSI C and utilizing the GTK+ toolkit.

Aims to be 100% graphically configurable, and comes pretty close, too.

Powerful file recognition system allows you to configure how files of different types are shown (with colors and icons), and what happens when you doubleclick them (spawn image viewers, music players, etc).

Includes more than 120 original pixmaps icons (16×15 pixels).

Internal support for most file operations (copy, move, rename, makedir etc).

4. GNOME Commander

GNOME Commander

Features:

GTK-2 GUI with standard mouse interactions.

GNOME mime types (MIME-Type management under development).

FTP using GnomeVFS ftp module.

SAMBA access.

Right click mouse menu with the usual file operations to run, open, open with.., delete or rename files and folders, and also to set properties like ownership and permissions.

Mouse context menu that easily can be extended by entries calling any kind of external application like viewers, editors or custom scripts to work on selected files or directories.

Quick device access buttons with automatic mounting and unmounting (“no-mount” option for just quick access to folders or otherwise automounted devices).

Latest accessed folder history.

Folder bookmarks.

Plugin support under development.

Fast file viewer for text, images and image meta data (Exif and IPTC).

Tools for searching, quick file name search in current dir, symlinking, comparing directories. …

A tool for advanced renaming of files supporting various types of meta-data.

Integrated command line.

5. Krusader

Krusader

IMHO the most feature rich file manager (CLI doesn’t count). I won’t list them all here, but you will find all the info you need on their home page.

8 years in development, with the new KDE 4 version which is knocking on the door, it might be the right choice for some of us.

6. Midnight Commander

Midnight Commander

I bet some of you clicked this thumbnail out of nostalgia for NC
Being a text mode application, GNU Midnight Commander can be used locally or remotely, on the console or under X Window System. By using full screen space of the terminals, it provides an intuitive user interface to the operating system, aiming to be a useful tool for users with any level of experience, from a newbie to a guru.

7. muCommander

muCommander

Java based file manager (that is why the MAC GUI) with all the advantages and disadvantages of that.
Here’s a non-exhaustive list of what you’ll find:

Virtual filesystem with local volumes, FTP, SFTP, SMB, NFS, HTTP and Bonjour support

Quickly copy, move, rename files, create directories, email files…

Browse, create and uncompress ZIP, TAR, GZip, BZip2, ISO/NRG, AR/Deb and LST archives

ZIP files can be modified on-the-fly, without having to recompress the whole archive

Universal bookmarks and credentials manager

Multiple windows support

I hope this article will help you decide which file manger is right for you.

It would be cool if everyone wrote what file manager he or she uses. Since WordPress.com doesn’t have polls it could be a nice alternative. Maybe it will help all those who didn’t decide yet

There are many cases when after looking at some of the FAQ on the web you ask yourself: “Are they for real? Who asks those questions anyway?” Questions like: “How Does Linux Kernel Versioning Work?” or “How much does Ubuntu cost?” don’t really provide you with the information you need. Mainly because they target a very specific kind of users.

On the other hand there are many really helpful FAQ, some of them were used in preparing this article. I also wondered around many forums collecting questions that real people ask frequently. The target of those questions are mainly Ubuntu users, who came from a Windows world and use it for about a week or two. Here are some of my findings. I hope they will actually help someone.

1. I know that Linux is case sensitive, but WHY???

The truth: Having it as case sensitive always made sense to me.. I always wondered why Windows wasn’t case sensitive..
The reason: case sensitive file names and options give you much more functionality and consistency. For example using ls in a script will always be ls and not LS, lS or Ls. Options like -u and -U will have different functionality, allowing you to do more. Also ls sorting is case sensitive too, that is why file names like Readme will come before readme.

2. Where is the ‘Program Files‘ folder? In which directory can I find my programs now???

You’ve got several… take your pick
Seriously, the are several places where programs typically reside

/bin – essential system commands
/usr/bin – general commands

Local application installs usually go in /opt or /usr/local (one
location came from BSD, the other from System V)

In addition there is /sbin, /usr/sbin and /usr/local/sbin which appear to
be for Linux/distro specific admin tools

If its a package with its own directory tree I would suggest /opt.

3. OK, I heard about scripts, I added ls /home to script.bat… Why doesn’t it run???

Unlike in windows, in Linux scripts don’t require any particular extension like .bat in order to run, but usually .sh is used. When you want to make it execute you have to make it ‘executable’:

(1)After writing shell script set execute permission for your script as follows
syntax:
chmod permission your-script-name

Examples:

$ chmod +x your-script-name
$ chmod 755 your-script-name

Note: This will set read write execute(7) permission for owner, for group and other permission is read and execute only(5).

(2) Execute your script as
syntax:
bash your-script-name
sh your-script-name
./your-script-name

Examples:

$ bash bar
$ sh bar
$ ./bar

4. I heard something about Windows Emulator – Wine, Vodka or something like that, how do I run windows apps with it???

You are lucky Wine folks didn’t hear you saying that, since Wine stands for Wine Is NOT an Emulator.
About running some windows software with it, it’s as simple as:

$wine sol.exe &

For list of applications supported by wine and much more visit here.

5. Some Linux “Guru” told me to use & (ampersand) at the end of the command when I want to continue using the CLI. I forgot to add it, what do I do???

Relax, buddy! Use ctrl+z to suspend the job, this will bring the CLI back and right after that run:

$bg

to resume the suspended job, but this time in the background.

6. OK I know about the apt-get remove, but what if I want to uninstall something that was installed with this make thingy???

Go to that particular directory you installed from, the one in which you ran make install, and run:

$make uninstall

in some cases it is:

$make deinstall

if that doesn’t work, there is probably no rule for uninstall in the makefile (check the README and INSTALL files for more info).
Unfortunately not all (very few) packages or packagers, to be more to the point, go to the trouble of giving you a target ‘uninstall’….

So if make uninstall doesn’t work you have to do it by hand. A trick that can be used sometimes is to run make install again and carefully examine the output (if it’s comprehensible) to find all the files to remove or at least get some clue.
Another trick if you think you might want to whack something later is to do -prefix=/opt/someplace/unique
when you configure it so at least you can find some of it (not all of it) in one directory later for whacking.

7. When I boot up Linux, according to System Monitor, Linux almost immediately starts using 100% of my memory. Is this a bug?

Your computer is using all of your memory to optimize the performance of Linux. It caches or stores pieces of applications on your memory so that when you need them, it will not have to hunt around the hard drive to find the application. Now IF you bring up a program, and your memory is “full” Linux automatically kicks some of the cache out to make room. It is a fast-as-lightening operation that does nothing but make Linux optimized and faster. Hey you paid for all this RAM – it better be used!

8. I heard here and there about how great vim is. Decided to give it a try, but now I can’t even quit it!!! What the hell is this thing???

Among many other, vim is two things:
(1) amazingly powerful text editor
(2) difficult to get used to text editor

Now to the point, when there is nothing more to explore in Linux and ‘nano’ becomes too limited for you start watching some vim tutorials on YouTube and later go here, for now all you have to know is: Esc->q!->Enter or Esc->wq->Enter when you actually done with it something.

9. OK, I tried CLI, I know what TAB is for, but I am getting tired of seeing the file name there and not being able to click it!

If you absolutely can’t live without a mouse here is a little trick for you: double click (or select) the file (or any other string) and then click the middle button. Now you are probably asking yourself why no one thought of this before… But wait, there is more – it works everywhere, not only CLI. Try not to forget ctrl+c, ctrl+v now!

10. There are those words Foo and Bar that Linux geeks use everywhere. Where do they come from?

Foo and bar paired together are apparently derived from FUBAR. FUBAR is an acronym that commonly means “Fucked Up Beyond All Repair” (used to describe the state of some equipment) or “Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition” (used to describe a situation or scenario), which now exists in many variations. Although it originated in the US Armed Forces, its usage has spread to civilian environments.

Source: Foo

Of course there is much more than can be asked and lots of things that can be said. In this article I tried to sum the most frequent questions I hear around me and the ones I see people asking on the web. I would like to hear from you about all those questions you are being asked again and again, but actually have a very simple answer.

As you all probably know Linux is not limited to just desktops. It’s far reaching, actually. Not that you’d have a Terminal app on it or anything, but you could. Some of you may have a mobile phone running Linux and you probably don’t even know it. The most popular phone in the world runs Unix. That’s right. The iPhone runs on Unix. Are there any other cool devices out there running on Linux or Unix? Of course there are:

10. Neo FreeRunner

Billed as a completely open source, hackable hardware platform, the Neo FreeRunner is the first OpenMoko phone intended for widespread use by non-developers. Frequent software upgrades are planned.

9. NetGear WGR614L

NetGear’s latest 802.11g WiFi router and access point was born to be hacked. The WGR614L is equipped with a MIPS32-based Broadcom 5354 system-on-chip (SoC) clocked at 240MHz, and supports several commercial and community-supported alternative Linux-based router distributions.

8. Garmin Nuvi 880

Garmin has posted Linux source code for its Nuvi 8xx and Nuvi 5xxx-series GPS navigation devices. The Nuvi 8xx offers a 4.3-inch, 480×272 display, and appears to be based on a Marvell PXA-3xx processor, Gnome Mobile Linux, and GeoClue location technology.

7. Sony MyLO

Physically, the Mylo resembles Sony’s popular Playstation Portable (PSP). However, its Linux- and Qtopia-based software environment is mainly aimed at connected applications, such as messaging, VoIP, and web-browsing. It comes with an Opera web browser, Skype client VoIP software, and GoogleTalk and Yahoo! instant messaging software. The device measures 1 x 4.8 by 2.5 inches, and sports a 2.4-inch QBVGA (320 x 240) LCD screen.

6. Archos 604 WiFi

A portable media player (PMP) from Archos is based on embedded Linux, Opera Software, which supplies its Opera Web browser for the device. its 30 GB hard drive capacity allows you to store up to 40 movies encoded with a PC. Play them on the built-in 3.5″ LCD color screen or playback on TV in high resolution up to 720 x 576 (DVD quality) with the DVR station.

5. Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition

The Nokia N810 features the Internet Tablet OS 2008 Linux distribution, based on maemo 4.0, which features MicroB, a Mozilla-based mobile browser, a GPS navigation application, WiMAX radio for use initially on Sprint’s Xohm network, new media player, and a refreshed interface.

4. Slim Devices SqueezeBox Duet

Logitech subsidiary Slim Devices has announced a major upgrade to its digital music distribution system. The SqueezeBox Duet includes a Linux-based WiFi-connected handheld device able to control the streaming of network-based music to one or more digital media adapters, and available with open source development tools.

3. Android

No actual devices yet, but the potential is amazing.

2. Stanley

We’ve heard of the DARPA Challenge, a road race for autonomous vehicles through the Californian dessert for cash and prizes, and we love it. Stanford University’s entrant, which won the race, was called Stanley, a Volkswagen SUB modified with lots of radar, ground-sensing, and optical gear, all running Linux.

1. Large Hadron Collider

“…Brookhaven has about 1,200 multicore x86 servers dedicated to the LHC, along with disk and tape storage that holds seven petabytes of data. Ernst says Brookhaven will have to scale that storage up significantly by 2012, when he expects to be storing 13 petabytes of Large Hadron Collider data.

Worldwide, the LHC computing grid will be comprised of about 20,000 servers, primarily running the Linux operating system. Scientists at Tier-2 sites can access these servers remotely when running complex experiments based on LHC data, Pordes says. If scientists need a million CPU hours to run an experiment overnight, the distributed nature of the grid allows them to access that computing power from any part of the worldwide network, she says. With the help of Tier-1 sites such as Brookhaven, the goal is to make using the grid just as easy for universities as using their own internal networks, according to Pordes.

Asked if the LHC project is the most complicated thing he’s ever worked on, Ernst gave a quick laugh and said, “Yeah, I would say so.”

It never hurts to remind you these small recipes aimed at programming novices:

1. Keep it simple. As in everything in life there are many ways to solve the same problem, but not like in life, in programming it is better to choose the simplest solution. The benefits of that are: code maintainability, easy to explain to others, easy to understand what you did with your code months ago.

2. Use design patterns. Design patterns can speed up the development process by providing tested, proven development paradigms. Effective software design requires considering issues that may not become visible until later in the implementation. Reusing design patterns helps to prevent subtle issues that can cause major problems, and it also improves code readability for coders and architects who are familiar with the patterns.

3. Comments. If in order to understand one’s code is has to be as green as Hulk, he probably didn’t follow the first tip. In many cases more self explanatory variables will do the trick and keep the code on a readable level. There are times when comments serve a purpose though. Algorithms can be hard to grasp and yet impossible to simplify through further abstractions. In such cases, you can explain yourself with comments. The rule of thumb for a good comment – it has to be an answer to “Why?” rather than “What?”.

4. High cohesion and Low coupling. Assign responsibility so that coupling remains low and cohesion high. Coupling is a measure of how strongly one element is connected to, has knowledge of, or relies on other elements. An element with low (or weak) coupling is not dependent on too many other elements. Cohesion is a measure of how strictly related and focused the responsibilities of an element are. An element with highly related responsibilities and which does not do a tremendous amount of work has high cohesion.

5. Don’t write deeply nested code. Nested code is code containing
case/if/receive
statements within other
case/if/receive
statements. It is bad programming style to write deeply nested code – the code has a tendency to drift across the page to the right and soon becomes unreadable. Try to limit most of your code to a maximum of two levels of indentation. This can be achieved by dividing the code into shorter functions.

I would like to hear from you about your experience and other tips.
